Mother's Day. A day, we are told, in which we honor our mother's. But mother's day started out as a protest against war. These mothers were tired of having their sons taken away from them, to fight in wars started by men and perpetuated by men, only to have them return home in varying degrees of disability, if they returned at all.

Read a brief history of Ann Jarvis, who pushed to have Mother's Day recognized nationally.
Presently, our Office of the Surgeon General has a few ideas of how mother's should treat themselves. Mother's and mother's-to-be, it's all about preparing your body to carry another, as many other's as you can. That is your duty in life, nothing more. (via Echidne) This isn't to say that mother's don't want to raise healthy children, but motherhood is not just about raising a child(ren), it is much, much more.
"I've declared this 'The Year of the Healthy Child' for the Office of the Surgeon General. We're looking at ways to keep children healthy and safe, from pre-birth through their teen years," Dr. Carmona said. "Each phase of a child's life has its own series of potential hazards, and we're trying to shine a light on preventing those illnesses, injuries, and deaths that are preventable. By appreciating what parents do every day and getting the best information out to parents and children, I hope that every child will grow up healthy, happy, and able to reach their own potential."
Then again, if you happen to be a woman that really wants to go down the motherhood path, and are considering a sperm donor, you might want to reconsider the homophobic and extremely dangerous path this administration is pushing on you. Dangerous, because it is just a-okay for a man who has multiple sexual relationships without protection to donate sperm, and will continue to be a-okay. However, a gay man in a monogomous relationship that practices safe sex will not be allowed to donate his sperm. Which of these two are more high risk, I ask? (via Carla)
The FDA has rejected calls to scrap the provision, insisting that gay men collectively pose a higher-than-average risk of carrying the AIDS virus. Critics accuse the FDA of stigmatizing all gay men rather than adopting a screening process that focuses on high-risk sexual behavior by any would-be donor, gay or straight.
"Under these rules, a heterosexual man who had unprotected sex with HIV-positive prostitutes would be OK as a donor one year later, but a gay man in a monogamous, safe-sex relationship is not OK unless he's been celibate for five years," said Leland Traiman, director of a clinic in Alameda, Calif., that seeks gay sperm donors.
Traiman said adequate safety assurances can be provided by testing a sperm donor at the time of the initial donation, then freezing the sperm for a six-month quarantine and testing the donor again to be sure there is no new sign of HIV or other infectious diseases.
To Mother's across the nation, Happy Mother's Day!
