Religious rhetoric has cycled back to front page news. If it hasn't then why stuff like the Existence of God has been proven, making front page news?
Becky discusses the right-wing TV show, 24, and how it is actually hurting our military. Extracting a pound of flesh barely describes the torture scenes. Then again, I only watched one or two episodes of the show -- it just did not move me to want to watch it again. Subliminal suggestion, perhaps?
Meanwhile, Lorraine has a very profound post on Bill Donohue and silencing women.
The entire video interview between Tucker and Bill is deeply disturbing. Why? Well, read through the transcript and see if there are men mentioned who need to be silenced. Silenced. Don't you love that word? What does it bring to mind? Muzzles? Ball gags? Women should be seen and not heard; isn't this one of the principal messages of conservative Catholicism, fundamentalist Protestantism, fundamentalist Islam, fundamentalist Judaism?
Muzzling women. I never quite got the hang of being seen and not heard, thank goodness.
While these nutballs are trying to muzzle women, other nutballs have taken it upon themselves to be self-imposed womb police. This particular nutball, unfortunately happens to be my state rep. Perhaps someone should pass legislation that no one can file legislation about or relating to body organs they do not have? Then again, Campfield is a right-wing puppet, who has in the past, filed legislation encouraged by other extremist nutballs (David Horowitz ring a bell?) Even though TN has those that want to move the state backwards in woman's sexual autonomy, some countries are moving forward, such as Portugal.
I can't help wondering if Tennessee will go farther than the one-sided license plates to continue to fund anti-abortionist activities. Sadly, it's becoming all the rage in other states.
Back to TN for a sec, Nashville's mayor vetoed the English-Only bill. Thankfully, nativism hasn't on out quite yet. In case you don't follow the link I've provided, TChris says;
Do the residents of Nashville truly believe that city employees should be prohibited from giving directions to a tourist in French?
Sheelzebub has a must-read post on a term familiar to many, poverty is violence.
There is a term that I heard in college a lot: Poverty is violence. I used to scoff at it until I got schooled on the subject. And it's true. It's violence--impersonal, state-sponsored violence.
Not to beat a dead horse, but, here is another great analysis of how the BlogCulling has effected others, and more importantly, the business of progressive blogging.
The final piece of this may be the most interesting. Given that kos is a business, this latest move is what public relations people call repositioning. Daily Kos is repositioning itself as the central place for local blogs supporting political candidates. It is a brilliant business move with an election coming up. If the local bloggers buy into this, kos becomes in one stroke a major voice in the Democratic Party.
The $64 question is how much ideological control will kos exercise? His post gives a clue. He said, "Those are sites focused on the races that will determine whether we lose control of Congress, or whether we expand our numbers to Lieberman-proof majorities." In shorthand, kos had gone from Dean to Emanuel. Gone is the 50 state strategy. Gone are the progressive ideas. Instead he will publicize sites for candidates that can win.
And just a little good news before the sea-saw bottoms out, the Dixie Chicks Swept the Grammys. (Like you haven't already heard that, but it was the only big good news I can find)
